20 February 2012

Hi All -
First regional enduro of 2012 was held in Barrydale, it was a long but scenic 2h30 drive from Cape Town. We got there and had plenty of time to spare, so the mind starts wondering what the route will be like etc etc.
It was time to kit up and do documentation and get to your starting position, did I mention it was already about 30 degrees at 10h00.
I started in row 10 and was off to a flyer taking the lead by the second corner. Then the mother of all hill climbs started it was endlessly going up and up and up ,they don’t call this the “Roof of Barrydale” for nothing, after cursing the route setter maybe I should call him the “devil” I got to the top. The route is 25km long, 11km going up, 3km up in the mountain & 11km coming down. It took me about 40min to go up 11km it was tough it felt like you were riding in an oven, my water in my camelback was almost finished when I got to the top. What goes up must come down and it was hell, it felt like they were sending us down sheer vertical drop offs, but I got to the end and just for laughs they sent us down a riverbed, the rocks were the size of my front wheel so you had to navigate your way through and over these boulders and that was lap 1 done I was shattered.
So after refuelling I got the courage to go out for my second lap I don’t know if I was just brave or plain stupid, I guess it was a bit of both, after about 3km into my second lap some barb wire got stuck in my back wheel, I was feeling rather good & strong up until this point, it took me the best part of about 20 min to get the wire out of my wheel. So off I went to tackle the rest of Barrydale’s mountain it was a bit easier the 2nd time , but I just lost all balance & concentration ( maybe it was the fatigue setting in) and took a tumble down the mountain, all I saw was front wheel & then back wheel. After I dusted myself off & check for any damage to myself & bike I was off again just trying to survive the last bit of the course, I made it & I finished 2 laps.
Just to put this race in perspective the top guys did 4 laps in our allotted race time of 3 hours. I guess I need to get more time on my bike and I need to work on my fitness.
Till next time - ANDY PEDERSEN ,HSE GM.
